Background of the Study
Urban transit systems, including bus networks, metro services, and light rail, are essential for promoting economic inclusion by providing affordable, reliable, and accessible transportation options. In Nigeria, urban areas face significant challenges with congestion, limited mobility, and unequal access to transportation, which disproportionately affect low-income populations. By improving urban transit systems, cities can enhance access to employment, education, healthcare, and other critical services, thereby fostering greater economic inclusion (Uche, 2023). Enhanced transit systems facilitate social mobility and contribute to reducing urban poverty by connecting disadvantaged communities with economic opportunities.

Modern urban transit systems reduce travel times, lower commuting costs, and improve the overall quality of life, enabling a broader segment of the population to participate in economic activities. Investments in transit infrastructure, such as dedicated bus lanes, advanced scheduling systems, and integrated ticketing, have been shown to boost public transport usage and stimulate local economic growth (Adeniyi, 2024). These systems also contribute to environmental sustainability by reducing carbon emissions and alleviating traffic congestion. Moreover, a well-developed transit system can attract private investments in urban redevelopment projects, further supporting economic inclusion.

However, the implementation of urban transit systems in Nigeria faces challenges including insufficient funding, management inefficiencies, and gaps in service coverage. These obstacles limit the ability of transit systems to deliver on their promise of economic inclusion and can exacerbate existing inequalities. This study aims to assess the role of urban transit systems in enhancing economic inclusion by evaluating their impact on mobility, job access, and overall quality of life in Nigerian cities.

Statement of the Problem
Despite significant investments in urban transit systems, many Nigerian cities continue to experience gaps in transportation access that hinder economic inclusion. A critical problem is that transit services are often concentrated in central urban areas, leaving peripheral and low-income neighborhoods underserved (Okeke, 2023). This uneven distribution of services exacerbates socio-economic disparities, as residents in poorly connected areas face longer travel times and higher transportation costs, which limit their access to job opportunities and essential services.

Furthermore, operational challenges such as irregular service, overcrowding, and inadequate maintenance reduce the reliability and attractiveness of urban transit systems. These issues deter potential users and prevent the systems from achieving their full potential in fostering economic inclusion. The lack of coordination between transit authorities and urban planners also contributes to inefficient route planning and service gaps. In addition, insufficient data on the socioeconomic impact of transit systems hampers efforts to evaluate their effectiveness and to design targeted improvements.

This study seeks to address these problems by examining how urban transit systems influence economic inclusion in Nigerian cities. It will explore the extent to which improved transit services correlate with better employment outcomes, increased access to education and healthcare, and overall improvements in the quality of life for marginalized communities. By identifying the factors that limit the effectiveness of urban transit, the research aims to propose actionable recommendations for creating a more inclusive transportation network that benefits all urban residents.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the impact of urban transit systems on economic inclusion in Nigerian cities.
  2. To identify operational challenges that limit transit service effectiveness.
  3. To recommend strategies for improving transit accessibility and inclusivity.

Research Questions

  1. How do urban transit systems affect economic inclusion in Nigerian cities?
  2. What are the main challenges that reduce the effectiveness of transit services?
  3. What measures can improve the accessibility and reliability of urban transit?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Urban transit systems significantly enhance economic inclusion by improving mobility.
  2. Operational inefficiencies negatively impact the effectiveness of transit services.
  3. Strategic improvements in transit management can increase economic inclusion.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on major urban centers in Nigeria from 2020 to 2025. Limitations include regional differences in transit system performance and data collection challenges related to socioeconomic indicators.

Definitions of Terms

  • Urban Transit Systems: Public transportation networks operating in urban areas.
  • Economic Inclusion: The extent to which all population segments have access to economic opportunities.
  • Mobility: The ability to move freely and efficiently within an urban area.
